The Telangana government has stepped number of vacant posts of sports teachers in schools and the sindhu effect

The P V Sindhu fever has not just gripped sports lovers across the country, but has also woken up the administration to the sporting needs of students. The Telangana government has stepped up its bid to fill the huge number of vacant posts of sports teachers in its schools and, to start with, a good 1,560 sports teachers will begin working from the middle of September. Of course, these appointments are on a contract basis.

"We are putting in all efforts to bring in transparency to sports and games," said state school education director G Kishan, adding that Rs 4.5 crore would be spent on sports in schools this year. There are 4,583 high schools in a total of 26,000 government schools. But, less than 2,600 schools have physical education teachers (PETs) or sports teachers, let alone own playgrounds. Not even one of the 3,244 primary schools has a sports teacher.

The school education department is keen on making two indoor and outdoor sports each mandatory for all high school students with immediate effect. And, the government wants to introduce a special biometric attendance system for sports classes to ensure that they take place regularly and that children participate without fail. According to Kishan, the first lot of 1,560 teachers will be distributed among the high schools, which have a strength of more than 100 students. At present, there are a little over 2,000 sports teachers in the state-run schools. The education department will also set up committees with joint collectors of respective districts as chairmen, to conduct sports events at block and district levels. These competitions will be videographed so that no genuinely talented student is deprived of a chance to get selected for the next level of competitions.
