Telangana state government is set to unfurl India’s largest flag erected on the tallest flagpole on June 2

The Telangana government is set to unfurl India’s largest flag erected on the tallest flagpole on June 2. The plan is currently waiting for a clearance from the Airport Authority of India. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had in May announced that the flag will be unfurled at the 92-acre Sanjeevaiah Park in Hyderabad to mark the Telangana formation day.

The proposed height of the flagpole is 303 feet — 10 feet more than the current tallest flagpole pole in Ranchi. The height could, however, be reduced to 295 feet if the AAI raises objections, said government sources. The dimensions of the flag are expected to be 72ft X 108ft.

Speaking to The Indian Express, an official from Telangana government said the flagpole would be erected on May 31 and a trial-run would be conducted on June 1.

“I cannot comment on the final length of the flagpole. AAI should take the decision by Tuesday,” said the official.

Manufactured by Kolkata-based firm Skipper Ltd, the cost of the flagpole is pegged at Rs 1.3 crore. It has been made using high tensile hot-rolled sheets. It took eight 40-feet-long trailers to transport the flagpole from Kolkata to Hyderabad. The parts reached Hyderabad in five to eight days and would be assembled by May 31.

The flag was made using knitted polyester at a cost of Rs 1.35 lakh by ‘The Flag Shop’ and weighs approximately 66 kg. It was the same Mumbai-based firm that made the the current largest flag at Pahari Mandir in Ranchi (66ft X 99ft).

“I received an order from the Telangana government to make three flags. They had ordered late and it was not possible to get all of them done. We delivered one flag in three weeks,” said Gyan Shah of The Flag Shop.

Retired public servant K V Singh of The Flag Foundation of India, who was consulted by the Telangana government, said: “The CM of Telangana wanted it to be the tallest and the largest flag in India. I met the state government’s Principal Secretary and I must say that things moved very fast.”
